The Columbus Area Arts Council has been actively promoting the
fine arts in and around Columbus since 1981. CAAC operates the
Columbus Art Gallery year round.
The Gallery has
presented over 200 formal exhibits and offers a gift shop that
features even more artists. CAAC has also sponsored over 180
performing arts events for schools and the general public that
have ranged from ballet to theatre and from storytellers to
concerts. Many of these events were the result of partnerships
with schools, the city, and other local organizations.
CAAC has identified the school children and
the seniors in our community as our main audiences. We find that
the local school systems, are falling short of meeting the fine
arts needs of their students. We also find that that a large percentage
of our residents are choosing to drive to Omaha or Lincoln for
their cultural entertainment. However, our growing senior
population is either unwilling or unable to drive out of town to
events. After residing
in the basement of the Columbus Public Library for over 25
years, the CAAC board and staff are researching the possibility
of partnering with other community groups to develop a downtown
cultural center. Within the new facility you would find a state
of the art Columbus Public Library, the Senior Center, the
Platte Valley Literacy Society, the Columbus Art Gallery, the
CAAC offices, a small performing arts theater, classrooms,
studio spaces and meeting rooms.
CAAC supports the community
and the arts by maintaining membership in the Columbus Area
Chamber of Commerce, the Downtown Business Association, the
Nebraska Arts Council, the Nebraska Humanities Council,
Nebraskans for the Arts, and Americans for the Arts.
